Water overtops temporary barriers in West Alton, along Highway 67

The crests in the area are expected on Tuesday and should be about four feet higher than the river's current level.

WEST ALTON, Mo. — The Mississippi River has overtopped temporary barriers in West Alton, including one put into place on the lower section of Highway 67.

The rock protective measure was put in place along the low point of the highway, but the waters overtopped and broke it Thursday afternoon. The Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District said the water is running the length of the lower lanes of the highway and will likely get to St. Charles Street then Highway 94.

Earlier Thursday, the district said they had numerous reports of overtopping of protective measures as the river was expected to rise as much as a foot in just one day. Wednesday, the fire district put out an urgent call saying anyone in the district that is not in a flood ready home should evacuate.

The crests in the area are expected on Tuesday and should be about four feet higher than the river's current level.
