Here's what you need to do to get your car ready for this week's winter storm

AAA expects 2 million people are expected to hit the roads in Missouri between Dec. 23 and the end of the year.

ST. LOUIS — Auto experts provided some tips to those planning to travel by road for the holidays on Monday.

As temperatures are expected to hit the single digits at the end of the week, roads will likely freeze and cause a challenge on the highway.

PJ Hamill, a mechanic at St. Louis Auto, popped the hood to show 5 On Your Side what drivers should check out before they head out.

He recommended checking your solvent if you get snow and ice piled onto the windshield.

There is a de-icer, a winter formula for the types of temperatures expected this week, and a regular windshield wash.

Hamill also stressed the importance of having a full engine, a healthy battery, and good tires.

“There's nothing worse than changing a tire on the side of the highway when your knuckles are frozen to a bone which is what we do when we service calls vehicles...we dress for it." he said. "The customer might not be dressed for it."

AAA expects two million people to hit the roads in Missouri between Dec. 23 and the end of the year.

"AAA research has found that nearly all wintertime crashes occur when there's adverse conditions occur when there are adverse conditions on the road," Nick Chabarria, a spokesperson said.

Whether drivers plan to put their car on the road or not this holiday season, those in the travel industry urge vigilance and preparedness.

“Make sure you're staying weather aware. You're paying attention to your local forecast. Regardless to the holiday, any time we get any kind of winter weather our biggest piece of advice is that if you can stay home, do that," Chabarria also said.

Other good tips:

  • Keep a blanket inside your car in case you get stuck on the road.
  • Keep your phone charged if you have to call for help.
  • Store a first aid kit and water.
