How residents are coping with the cold in the St. Louis area

Due to our unseasonably warm winter so far, we may be a little out of practice.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — The fact that St. Louis-area residents are so “out of practice” when it comes to the cold probably makes it seem worse than it really is. But the temperature has certainly captured people’s attention.

Sunday morning In Brentwood, Randy Helm conquered the easy problem of scraping ice off his windshield.

“Yeah, I go back to Kansas City,” said Helm.

Then came the difficult part.

“I got to see about the roads out there,” said Helm. “I’m not sure what mid-Missouri looks like, so if it’s bad, I’ll just leave tomorrow.”

Light snow fell in Creve Coeur shortly before noon, Sunday, when the temperature hovered right around 20 degrees.

Dimico Davis was in Florissant waiting for a bus after spending the New Year with his mother.

“Any time,” he said, rocking back and forth alongside the road. “Five more minutes.”

Davis came prepared.

“It’s cold!” he said. “I am double-layered: two jackets, sweatsuit, two pair of socks, no gloves, hat, cap. I’m pretty much bundled-up from head to toe.”

He rocked back and forth a few more times.

“And this bus should be coming ‘round the corner,” he said.

At the dog park in Hanley Industrial Park, canines seem to be invigorated by the cold. Humans are less enthusiastic.

“Once I get moving around, it’s not bad," Jim Brown said. "Although the wind’s kind of tough.”

A dog was leaning against his leg.

“I don’t know if they know the difference,” said Brown. “They’ve never seen the puddles frozen over, before, so they’re taking that a little bit careful.”

The weather forecast calls for it to get up into the 40s soon before it goes back down into the 20s by the end of the week.
