National Weather Service says EF-0 tornado hit Chesterfield, neighbors assess damage

Surveyors went out Tuesday to see how far the damage spread.

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. — The National Weather Service verified that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Chesterfield Monday night.

Tuesday afternoon, signs of recovery were already popping up in Chesterfield where the National Weather Service says the tornado touched down around 6:30 p.m.

“We did see enough tight circulation and some indication on the radar that it was picking up the debris. It did touch down just northeast of the intersection of 340-64 area, started to do some tree damage in that area in a line about two miles long, lasting about three minutes,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Jared Maples said.

Maples says the tornado went from roughly Chesterfield Parkway to New Bedford Court just between I-64 and 141, with windspeeds faster than the speed limit.

“What we'd surveyed, and came down to the best determination based on those damage indicators, was about 85 miles per hour,” Maples said.

Lauren Spielberg heard the storm come barreling through her backyard.

“It sounded like an airplane taking off or like a train coming by. It was the loudest. That was what was most scary, I think, the sound of it all,” Spielberg said.

Spielberg says she saw the debris flying through the air in a massive gray cloud and when it was over she stepped out to see the siding ripped off the back of their house.

“There's probably between $50,000 to $75,000 worth of damage between the roof, the siding, the fence and everything else,” Spielberg said.

The neighbors were all there for each other to lend a helping hand.

“It was a mess and so everybody kind of in a team effort to start, cleaning up last night,” Spielberg said.

Maples said no injuries or deaths were reported due to the tornado.
