ST CHARLES, Missouri — The 18th annual Missouri American Water MR340, the world’s longest nonstop river race, has been canceled Wednesday due to unsafe river and weather conditions expected in the St. Louis region into Thursday morning.

Missouri American Water, the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, announced in a press release Wednesday afternoon that the race that started on Aug. 1 has been halted over anticipated severe thunderstorms, high wind gusts, large hail and even one tornado in the surrounding Metro St. Louis area. Many more areas are now under a Storm Alert and Flood Watch from tonight through early Thursday, including all of the Metro jurisdiction.

Previous storms in the area flooded local tributaries and caused the Missouri River to rise and pick up a large amount of debris, including large trees.

“A storm with very heavy rain targeting the final 100+ miles of the race, nighttime paddling without moonlight, and the changing river conditions all threatened the safety of race participants,” Missouri American Water said in the release. “Racers have been asked to proceed to the nearest boat ramp to exit the river and connect with their ground support crew. Safety boats are sweeping the remaining race course.”

The race usually features several participants who travel more than 300 miles by boat, kayak, and canoe from Kansas City to St. Charles, Missouri.

Steve Schnarr, executive director of Missouri River Relief, said in a statement:

“We’re sad to end the race early but protecting our paddlers is our top priority. We have been closely monitoring the weather and river conditions and this was the right call for everyone involved.”

A finish line party is still anticipated for Friday evening between 6-9 p.m. at the Lewis and Clark Boathouse. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Funds raised from the race will benefit Missouri River Relief and the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Museum and organizations that promote environmental initiatives and education, according to Missouri American Water. About 200 volunteers and staff members from Missouri American Water, Missouri River Relief, River Miles and the Lewis and Clark Boathouse help launch the race each year.
