Hail, wind damage, flooding reported around St. Louis area as severe storms move through

A wide variety of storm damage was reported after a line of powerful storms moved through the area.

ST. LOUIS — Downed trees, hail damage and flooding were reported around the St. Louis area as a significant storm struck the St. Louis area on Sunday.

There was a report of a tree on a house in Oakville, Missouri, near where a tornado was confirmed by radar earlier in the evening. The damage was located near Morningdale Place.

Interstate 55 near Loughborough Avenue looked like a swimming pool after the flash flooding around 6 p.m. Some drivers were trapped inside their cars as traffic was stopped in both directions.

A white pickup truck stalled in the water as the driver tried to get his engine restarted. He was eventually rescued by St. Louis firefighters at about 6:30 p.m.

Other drivers were frustrated and shocked at the depth of the water on the roadway.

"It's all flooded down there on the highway," said one driver, who detoured onto Loughborough Avenue. "It's completely flooded. The scene is just a foot or two of water. It's all the way up to that guy's knees. It's just constant rain."

The highway was completely reopened as of 8 p.m.

There was also damage throughout the Metro East, including in Belleville and Dupo, where several branches were ripped from trees.

First responders in Clinton County said as of 7 p.m., the area didn't have any structural damage.

Photos from Sikeston sent in by viewer Eric Henry showed a large tree snapped at the base of the trunk. Another photo from Eric Henry showed some minor flooding and what appeared to be a toppled structure in the aftermath of the storm.
