Storm damage forces Fenton family from their home

A tree went through their roof, knocking open the front door, destroying the bedrooms where their 3-year-old daughter and 11-month-old son sleep.

FENTON, Mo. — A family in Fenton is still recovering more than a week after a tree fell through their home.

When Alexa and Brendan Davis moved into their Fenton home two years ago, they knew it was the place they wanted to raise their family.

“That house really had, for the short time we’ve been there, has built quite a bit of memories we had as a family,” Brendan Davis said.

Memorial Day weekend they were at Lake of the Ozarks when they got an unexpected call from their neighbor.

“He said ‘Hey, I hate to tell you this, but your tree in your front yard fell on your house,’” Brendan Davis said. “Then he told me two trees in the backyard had fallen as well.”

The tree went through their roof, knocking open the front door, destroying much of the living space including the bedrooms where their 3-year-old daughter and 11-month-old son sleep.

“It took out our kids toy beds,” Brendan Davis said. “It took out where we sit in the living room the majority of nights.”

“99.9% of the time that was where we were at right there in the living room,” Alexa Davis said. “If we were home we probably would’ve been in the living room watching TV. I’m not sure how long it took the tree to fall, probably a split second, but my babies would’ve been sitting right there.”

Since that night the family of four has found refuge in a nearby hotel where Alexa says she can only count her blessings that her family is safe.

“A house is just stuff,” Alexa Davis said. “It’s just a thing. We’re not replaceable, but everything in it is.”

Though the family does have insurance, which is assisting them with temporary housing, their claim won’t cover everything that was destroyed by the storm.
