ST. LOUIS — Overnight storms brought heavy rain and strong winds to the St. Louis area. The effects of those storms remained for the Tuesday morning drive for some.
As of 6:55 a.m., water on area highways was still causing issues on both sides of the river, and more than 1,000 people were without power in the St. Louis area.
Flooding near the Interstate 55/70–64 split in East St. Louis split in the Metro East caused rush-hour backups on westbound I-55 Tuesday morning.
Flash flooding at other locations included water from Creve Coeur Creek covering Creve Coeur Mill Road north of Olive and ponding on Interstate 64 near the Taylor overpass. Water in both of those areas has since receded.
In Rock Hill, a man had to be rescued from rising water in the parking lot of a business early Tuesday morning. Emmanuel Lare was sleeping in his tractor-trailer in a parking lot during the storms along Rock Hill Industrial Court when he realized water was coming into the cab.
"I was sleeping last night, and I woke up around 2 a.m.," Lare said. "I saw the water around me, and I tried to open the door, but the water was touching my door a little bit. That's why I called 911 to let them know I'm not safe."
The Rock Hill Fire Department was able to take him to safety by a water rescue boat. Fire Chief Tim Kendrick said, thankfully, the man was not injured.
"The water came up so fast that he got stranded in there, so we had to rescue him by boat," Kendrick said.
Water remained on the parking lot Tuesday morning, and the area is known to have flash flooding issues.
Those water issues were a result of heavy rainfall. Most of the St. Louis area got more than two inches of rain in the last 24 hours.
In Chester, Illinois, State Street was closed due to downed power lines. Ameren Illinois told 5 On Your Side that about 1,000 customers in the area were without power due to the downed lines. Crews were on the scene working to repair the damage and restore service.
Weather will remain breezy with a chance for showers throughout the day on Tuesday, but the chance for severe weather with this system has ended.
