ST. LOUIS — A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for most of the St. Louis metropolitan area overnight and into Friday as a storm is expected to bring sleet and freezing rain into the area.
Lows tonight will be right around freezing. As rain falls to the surface with below-freezing temperatures, ice will form on the areas that are below 32 degrees. Winter weather moves in around 9 p.m. south of Rolla to Potosi line and around midnight into the metro.
The National Weather Service has issued the advisory from 9 p.m. tonight until noon on Friday. Areas under the advisory are shown in purple on the map below. Counties under the advisory can expect freezing rain building up of one- or two-tenths of an inch. Most of the accumulation will happen from midnight until sunrise.
Some of the westernmost counties of the 5 On Your Side viewing area will be under a Winter Storm Warning. That means they are likely to see more significant ice and some snow accumulation. In those counties — which are shown in pink on the map below — the storm could bring as much as a half-inch of ice and an inch of snow. The storm will also have wind gusts of up to 30 mph in central and western Missouri, which could cause power outages.
Travel is not recommended tonight into the early morning hours and morning commute.
A chance of precipitation changing back over to rain is expected Friday morning as the temperature rises above the freezing mark.
The low-Pressure area in Texas is pushing the moisture our way from late this evening into the overnight hours.
Saturday another piece of energy brings flurries to some light snow showers and mainly cloudy.
Dry weather returns Sunday into the first half of next week with temperatures in the 40s to near 50.
