ST CHARLES, Mo. — Temperatures have been dangerously low in the St. Louis region.
Heating sources such as; furnaces, space heaters, and fireplaces can pose a serious threat to the safety of residents, but this danger is preventable.
The St. Charles Fire Department issued tips for people to stay fire-safe and prepare for the low temperatures.
Deputy Chief Steve Brown said in a press release, "Remember that fire safety is a year-round concern, and it's essential to remain vigilant to protect your family and property."
The tips included:
- Use space heaters with automatic shut-offs, and don't plug them into extension cords or power strips.
- Keep anything that can catch fire at least 3 feet away from alternative heating sources.
- Clean your fireplace and chimney before use and use a glass door or sturdy screen to stop stray embers.
- Move outdoor firepits at least 15 feet away from anything that can catch fire before use.
- Always have a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Test and replace smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
"Please contact the Saint Charles City Fire Department at 636-949-3250 for further information on home fire safety," Brown said.
