Storm Alert | Winter weather advisory in effect for the St. Louis area

The upcoming system will be a sloppy one with rain, sleet and snow all falling at the same time through much of the duration of this storm

ST. LOUIS — A winter weather advisory goes into effect Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. and will stay in effect through noon Thursday.

The first round moves in this evening, mainly after 6 p.m. for St. Louis metro, areas to our west will see sleet, snow and rain first, roughly around 5 p.m. After 6 p.m., expect for sleet, snow and rain all at once; this will gradually shift to mainly sleet and snow overnight into early Thursday morning.

Overnight Wednesday to Thursday there is potential to pick up 1” of sleet and snow.

Along with that, there will be areas of freezing rain mixing in, so bridges and elevated surfaces will collect ice and accumulating snow and sleet much faster than well-traveled roadways.

Sleet and snow will begin to mix with rain through the day Thursday and become mostly rain Thursday as temperatures climb above freezing.

Thursday evening, as the sun goes down, most of the rain will transition back to sleet & snow overnight for Friday morning. An additional 1” of sleet and snow is expected Friday morning. Snow and sleet look to taper off late Friday afternoon with 1 to 3 inches of total snowfall expected.

Additionally, there will be ¼ - ½ of rainfall mixing in from time to time and this will create a slushy mix on the roads, but bridges and overpasses could collect ice Wednesday night and again Thursday night.

Saturday, the system moves out, but it will stay cloudy and cold with occasional morning flurries. Sunday more sunshine is expected with temperatures rebounding into the 40s.
