Be a part of the Super Coral Play during this year’s Super Bowl

Find out what is happening to the coral reefs in the world, and how you can help to fix it.

MIAMI — The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee and more than 50 NFL stars are teaming up with the MSC Foundation for a unique campaign called Super Coral Play. Advisory Board Chair Matthew McKinnon and Marine Scientist Carl Gustaf Lundin are here to tell us more.

Carl explains that there have been a lot of changes in the reefs around Florida and across the world. Scientists like him are trying to find ways to deal with those changes. If you grow up in a rough neighborhood, as a person or as a coral, in some cases you become more resilient. Some corals are acting more capable to cope with these kinds of shifts. Working with the Super Bowl Committee Carl says has been an exciting opportunity to spread the message about getting coral reefs back in good health.

CAPTAIN COOK, Hawaii - At the edge of an ancient lava flow where jagged black rocks meet the Pacific, small off-the-grid homes overlook the calm blue waters of Papa Bay on Hawaii's Big Island - no tourists or hotels in sight. Here, one of the islands' most abundant and vibrant coral reefs thrives just below the surface.

Matthew notes that coral is in real danger, and Florida hosts most of the coral reefs in America. The U.N. believes that up to 90% of remaining coral could die out in the next 20 years. He says that the MSC Foundation has teamed up with the Big Game not just to get the word out about how serious this situation is, but also because there are things every individual can do about it to be part of the solution.

The Super Coral Play is about making a play in the Super Bowl and making a play to save coral. Learn more at SuperCoralPlay.org or OceanCayMSC.com.
