ALTON, Ill. — On Wednesday, Schnucks courtesy clerk Ben Mazur reluctantly took credit for his act of heroism last month, when he reacted without hesitation and saved a baby in a runaway grocery cart.
With Mazur's colleagues at Schnucks gathered around, the mayor of Alton, Illinois, David Goins, made a surprise visit to the store and presented Mazur with a certificate proclaiming May 5 "Ben Mazur Day."
"People think I'm their Superman," Mazur said. "I am just honored to save that baby."
The recognition was made even more special because May 5 is Mazur's birthday.
Mazur, who is on the autism spectrum, has worked at Schnucks for about two years through the company's Challenge Unlimited program. He is also enrolled at Lewis & Clark Community College.
