EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — He was supposed to serve his community. Instead, an East St. Louis Police officer is accused of stealing from it.
According to the federal indictment, Mario Fennoy worked as a desk sergeant in the East St. Louis Police Department. In 2017, Fennoy’s base salary was $69,000, but he collected more than $135,000 in overtime.
In 50 instances when Fennoy logged overtime, he was at home instead of working. The indictment cited a two-week pay period during which he logged 100 hours of overtime in addition to his regular 80 hours. Fennoy is also accused of not responding to calls he was dispatched to.
The East St. Louis City Manager sent the following statement:
“The City of East St. Louis has many police officers who make sacrifices every day to compensate for the department being understaffed. It is disheartening to learn that a member of our Police Department may have defrauded the City at the expense of our tax-paying citizens. This Administration will cooperate fully with the U.S. Attorney’s Office investigation.”
“I hope the accusations aren't true,” said Maurice Scott, who works as a youth mentor and coach in East St. Louis. “I know him to be a sound police officer. But, we need all hands on deck. We have to be above board, especially in a community like East St. Louis. If we don't, then we are disappointing our seniors and our youth.”
