Man charged for allegedly setting up home invasion that left accomplice dead, prosecutors say

Police said August Archambault set up a burglary at a Wood River apartment but his accomplice ended up dead after a struggle over a gun.
A man was found dead from a gunshot wound on the parking lot of an apartment complex. The Wood River police said the incident "appears to be an isolated event."

WOOD RIVER, Ill. — A Glen Carbon man was charged with multiple crimes after investigators said he planned a home invasion that ended with his alleged accomplice dead.

August Archambault, 20, was charged with home invasion and several other felonies in connection with an incident that left 18-year-old Kaden Topal dead on May 16.

According to a Facebook post from the Wood River Police Department, police were called to the Thompson Street Apartments just before midnight on May 16 for a report of a single gunshot with a person down. When Wood River police arrived, they found a man in the parking lot bleeding from a gunshot wound. A gun was found on the ground near his body.

During their investigation, a man who lived in the apartment told police that he was in the apartment with Archambault, who the resident had invited over. He told police someone he didn't know entered the apartment, attacked him and stole his gun.

The victim told police they struggled over the gun, and during the struggle, a shot was fired. The shot struck Topal, killing him.

According to charging documents, police seized Archambault's phone as part of the investigation. Police said they discovered "incriminating text messages" that showed Archambault planning the burglary.

Archambault was charged with one count of home invasion, one count of aggravated robbery and one count of residential burglary. The charges were filed on July 26, but Archambault was not taken into custody until Sept. 13. He was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Tampa, Florida.
