ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis man is facing five charges in connection with a deadly shooting earlier this year.

Lavell Nunley, 27, was charged with second-degree murder, robbery and multiple other crimes in the shooting death of 27-year-old Michael Rice.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened shortly before 2 p.m. on Jan. 6 in the 5500 block of Page Avenue. There, officers found the victim, identified as 27-year-old Michael Rice, near a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his stomach. He was unconscious and not breathing.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to charging documents, a witness came to police four days after the shooting and told them he was inside the home at the time of the shooting and was also victimized by Rice.

The witness said he was in Rice's home with Nunley when Nunley pulled out two guns and demanded the witness' property, the charging documents said. The witness said he handed over his phone, cash and ID. After noticing a gun on a nearby table, the witness grabbed it before locking himself in a bathroom.

The witness told police Nunley fired multiple shots through the bathroom door, and the witness fired back. The witness said he jumped out of the second-story window and ran off.

Charging documents said the evidence inside the home lined up with what the witness told them, including the witness's ID and phone.

Security video near the home showed a man running away from the scene who matched the witness' description of Nunley, according to the charging documents.

Nunley was charged with second-degree murder during perpetration of a felony, first-degree robbery, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.
