Police preparing to re-present evidence in fire that killed 3 children

On Monday, a spokeswoman with the police department said they are still working on the case and hope to re-present evidence in the case soon.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is preparing to re-present evidence against the mother of three children killed in a fire in south St. Louis earlier this month.

On Oct. 20, a fire started in an apartment on the 1100 block of S. 14th Street. Trapped inside the apartment were three children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years old. The 6-month-old died the day of the fire, and the other two died in the following days.

Fire investigators said they believe the fire was accidental.

The mother of the children was taken into custody the day after the fire but was released after the circuit attorney's office decided not to file charges.

On Monday, a spokeswoman with the police department said they are still working on the case and hope to re-present evidence in the case "as soon as possible." The spokeswoman said there are no new suspects in the case.

At a vigil held for the children on Wednesday, family members and friends defended the mother.

"She was going to the store to get them something to eat,” Pastor Doug Hollis said Wednesday night.
