WENTZVILLE, Mo. — A man was charged for being a sex offender within 500 feet of a public park after police said he was watching children in the bathroom of a Wentzville park.

Ryan A. Hoffman was charged Wednesday in connection with the Tuesday afternoon incident.

Police said they were called to Progress Park at around 2 p.m. for a report of a suspicious person allegedly watching children use the public restroom.

By the time police got there, Hoffman was already gone, but one of the people at the park wrote down his license plate number.

Police matched the plates to Hoffman, a registered sex offender. Video showed he was at the park for nearly two hours, a violation of his sex offender registration.

In a phone call with his probation officer, he said he intended to go to the park to play basketball and did know that he was not allowed to be there.

He was being held in the Wentzville Jail.
