CLAYTON, Mo. — Four former Clayton mayors have come out against the School District of Clayton’s plan to purchase a prime redevelopment site in the city.

In a letter sent over the weekend to the Clayton Board of Education and Superintendent Nisha Patel, the four former mayors — Linda Goldstein, Harold Sanger, Hugh Scott and Ben Uchitelle — asked the school district to back off its pending acquisition of the 9-acre office campus of footwear retailer Caleres Inc., at 8300 Maryland Ave., calling it “unwise to the extreme” and saying it could “drive a serious wedge between the School District and your residents.”

After at least two developers had the site under contract in the past 18 months and then dropped plans, with at least one attributing that decision to current economic conditions, the school district said last week it would purchase the site as soon as mid-February for an undisclosed price.
