BUNKER HILL, Ill. — A young girl was killed and another was injured in a UTV crash Saturday in rural Bunker Hill.

Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl told 5 On Your Side that deputies received the call about the crash at about 11 a.m. Saturday. Two girls, 11 and 12, were driving a Polaris Ranger UTV southbound on Shaw Road, about a half-mile south of Prairie Dell Road, when they lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll several times.

Both girls were ejected from the UTV, Kahl said. The 12-year-old died in the crash, and the 11-year-old was airlifted to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The 11-year-old's condition was unknown as of Tuesday morning, and the crash remained under investigation.

The sheriff said he's seen an uptick in UTV accidents in the past 10 years and reminded the community they can be dangerous. They are not made for roadway use and have more horsepower than expected, and you need to wear seatbelts and make sure the driver is capable of operating it, Kahl said.
