JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. — Most carjacking victims have no idea what their car is being used for.
In this case, the victim learned her car was used in a series of crimes, including murder.
"The thought of this kind of heinous crime being done with our car never crossed my mind not in a million years," said Wendi Elliot.
On the night of July 5, Wendi Elliot said she parked her car right in her De Soto driveway.
She said several hours later, she got a call from police telling her it had been stolen. Where they ended up finding it is a place she never imagined.
"That was the first new car brand new car in 20 years," she said.
For Elliot, her 2016 Chrysler 200 told a story.
It's how the Elliot's took family vacations and sometimes even where the kids played.
"Just great memories with the car but the end of it, the end of the car's story, where its at now and how it got there is tragic," she said.
Officers discovered her car nearly 10 days later after it crashed into a pole near south broadway and Osceola in St. Louis.
The driver found shot to death.
"I don't care if they were breaking the law or doing something illegal no one deserves to die like that," she said.
Police later identified him as 17-year-old Davaun Winters.
"Yes, we lost our car and it put us in a bind, but there's a momma out there that's burying her son," she said.
Wendi admits she had her keys and a gun in her glove box.
Police say the gun was not used in the murder.
"Everything that happened with our car and inside our car is just as bad as if it had been our gun that they had gotten a hold of," she said.
She hasn't been able to see her car since she got that call because it's part of an ongoing investigation.
At this point, she's not sure if she even wants to.
The car was the family's only way to get around.
Friends set up a GoFundMe account to help get them a new one.
