Suspect named in north county hit-and-run that killed 4-year-old

Police said Demetrius Cole's license was revoked and he was speeding without his headlights on when he struck two children in a stroller.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Police identified the suspect in a hit-and-run that killed a 4-year-old and hospitalized a 2-year-old on Friday night.

Police said in a Saturday press release that Demetrius Cole, 27, of Florissant, is charged with second-degree murder, leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injury.

Police said that at 9:22 p.m. Friday, Cole was driving a black Nissan westbound on Chambers Road near Clairmont Drive when he struck a stroller that a mother was pushing along a crosswalk and drove away.

Four-year-old Tavares Chisolm was inside the stroller with his 2-year-old sister. Tavares died and his sister was hospitalized with leg fractures.

Police later arrested Cole.

Police said surveillance video showed that the car was speeding without its headlights on when it hit the children, and it didn't stop or brake.

Cole claimed his car had been stolen before the incident and that he recovered it after the incident, police said, but police never received a stolen vehicle report and Cole couldn't describe who stole it or where it was stolen.

Cole has several driving while revoked violations, police said, and he admitted that his license was revoked. He also has a pending driving while intoxicated case in judicial court and is on federal parole for a weapons violation.

Anyone with information about this incident should call St. Louis County police at 636-529-8210 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS(8477).
