Some of the smallest towns in Missouri are experiencing the worst flooding. About 350 people call Portage Des Sioux home, but over the last week, that number has dwindled to about 30.
Fisherman Mark Epperson is one resident who is sticking out the high waters. His fishing rod is stowed away, but he has brought a different food supply into town.
“We’ve got other things to deal with right now,” Epperson explained. “Not everyone has a boat. When they’re up in town, they can bring food in. We’ll pick them up, put in their order, take them to see their house, and get what we need at the same time.”
Epperson has made this trip every day for the last week. On Tuesday he made eight trips back and forth.
“There’s always someone in there needing a ride in when I’m bringing others out,” he said.
What was once a three-minute drive has turned into a 40-minute boat ride, after floodwaters filled cornfields and roads after topping a levee.
“Generally, they work pretty good, until they get overwhelmed,” said Epperson. “Then there’s nothing you can do. Mother nature takes over.”
