ST. LOUIS — A woman pistol-whipped in the heart of the city's Shaw neighborhood said she's lucky to be alive.
The victim is one of more than 20 people to be robbed in the neighborhood this year.
"It's a beautiful area with wonderful people and a lot going on, it just was like my perfect place to live and it just doesn't feel that way right now," the woman, who asked not to be identified, said.
Her ideal neighborhood, now seen through a warped view.
"I could've died, I could've been shot easily, I was lucky I didn't get shot," she said.
She was just getting home from watching a Blues game Monday night when two armed men approached her.
"I was screaming really loud and the guy just like hit me in the head with his gun and then I fell to the ground and they took my stuff and then they ran off," she said.
Bleeding profusely and in a panic, she got in her car and drove off.
"What was going through my mind was nothing, blankness it was just terror fear I wasn't trying to scream to accomplish anything I just couldn't help but scream," she said.
The robbery happened on Shenandoah. That incident and dozens of others causing police to roll out a robbery detail that will specifically handle robberies.
It consists of 10 officers and 1 sergeant.
"I felt really good about that, it made me feel like maybe something good can happen from this and it made me feel like it could be a good thing in the end."
While the extra patrols help ease her worries, she said, at the moment, the neighborhood she loves just doesn't feel like home.
"It's my place, and it really breaks my heart that I'm not safe there anymore."
The victim said, thankfully, the gunmen only got away with her purse.
So far, No arrests have been made.
