ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County Executive Sam Page is starting the process to replace the prosecuting attorney after Wesley Bell won a seat in Congress on Tuesday.
In a press release, Page said he will begin accepting applications to fill the role Wednesday. The person chosen for the role will serve the remaining two years of Bell's term.
According to the press release, applicants must be:
- A member of the same political party as the previous occupant. Bell is a Democrat.
- A licensed practicing attorney in Missouri for at least five years and resident of the county for at least three years before assuming office.
The online application process is open now, and applications will be accepted through Nov. 15. Click here for more information.
A committee will screen applicants and finalists will be interviewed by Page. Page's selection will go before the County Council for confirmation.
The replacement will serve through the end of 2026.
Bell took office as county prosecutor in 2019 after defeating longtime incumbent Bob McCulloch in 2018. Bell said he has focused on reducing violent crime while reforming the criminal justice system.
On Tuesday, he defeated Republican Andrew Jones in the race to represent Missouri's 1st Congressional District. He defeated incumbent Cori Bush in the Democratic primary earlier this year.
He said he wants to protect voting rights, abortion access and gun safety laws while in Congress. He will be sworn in as a congressman on Jan. 3, 2025.
