ST. LOUIS — Rain and flood waters have provided the perfect breeding ground for pests in the St. Louis area.
Swarms of Buffalo Gnats, black flies and mosquitos have taken over neighborhoods. Dan Rottler at Rottler Pest and Lawn Solutions said there are a few things homeowners can do to reduce the number of pests around the house.
Reducing standing water is the best way to combat the clouds of insects. Folks should look at unused flower pots, kids toys and common places water pools.
“It’s in some of these areas that can be as close as the gutters or even the downspout that the gutters run into,” Rottler said.
“Walking around the home maybe it’s a pot for a plant that you’re not using is holding water, could be up close to the house. Pests like to breed in cool damp places, cut and clean up the vegetation you have around your home.”
Rottler recommends using DEET that has a concentration of 25 percent. 5 On Your Side crews have found that “Buggins Natural Insect Repellent” is great for keeping the gnats away.
