Calhoun County residents racing against time as floodwaters continue to rise

Governor J.B. Pritzker deployed the Illinois National Guard to help with flood relief efforts.

HARDIN, Ill — Floodwaters are back on the rise across the bi-state, prompting the national guard to help out in Illinois.

Sandbaggers are working overtime in many cities, trying to stop the floodwaters, and many homeowners are now scrambling to try and shore up their homes.

In many places officials are warning homeowners and business owners to get out now while they can.

It's a race against time in Calhoun County as people in the small town of Hardin are trying to prevent water from coming into town and ruining homes and businesses.

The flooding got the Calhoun Warriors football team ditching the pads for bags.

"After they said 40 feet we started sandbagging on Wednesday night," said Junior Grant Gilman.

"It shows that we care and help everybody out," added Gilman.

Kim Baalman, the owner of the Hardin Drive in could definitely use some help.

"[19]93 we had water up to here, this was all that was left of our windows, it was full of water inside," explained Baalman.

She doesn't want to re-live '93 so now she's living inside of her diner while fighting the flood.

"I'll tell you what, our community is tight and everybody works together to make it work here," added Baalman.
