ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County was placed under a state of emergency following flooding earlier this week.

County Executive Sam Page signed the emergency declaration Thursday after flooding damaged homes and infrastructure and led to multiple deaths. In a press release, Page said he signed the declarations at the request of the county's Office of Emergency Management Director Michele Ryan.

"The declaration allows Ryan to request state and federal resources to assist in the response to storms that hit the region on Tuesday," the press release said.

Later Tuesday, a woman was found dead inside a car on Bayless Avenue after floodwaters receded from the roadway. Hours later, officials confirmed a second fatality along the same creek

The flooding has continued in other parts of St. Louis County. Meramec River is expected to crest at major flood levels Friday. MoDOT closed 141 under Interstate 44 Thursday morning due to flooding.

The press release said county road crews are monitoring river levels and closing some streets in anticipation of high water.
