A spooky chill in the air for Halloween

It could actually be the coldest Halloween in the record books as far as high temperatures go.

ST. LOUIS — Mother nature is providing more of a trick rather than a treat for Halloween this year. It could actually be the coldest Halloween in the record books as far as high temperatures go.

The lowest high temperature ever recorded in St. Louis on October 31st is 41 degrees back in 1993. The 5 On Your Side weather team says temperatures will likely stay in the 30s.

Freeze warnings are in effect for much of the region including the St. Louis metro area.

Areas that don't drop below freezing early Thursday will do so early Friday when all areas will be in the 20s for lows. A freeze watch remains in effect for these areas.

With the cold air surging in overnight, rain will likely mix with and change to a bit of wet snow. Accumulation is not likely in the metro area with ground temperatures still well above freezing. Perhaps a dusting to an inch may stick to grassy areas farther northwest of St. Louis.

Other than elevated surfaces, roads should remain wet with limited impacts from any snow.

Gusty winds will continue throughout the day keeping wind chills in the 20s. Skies will clear from west to east through the afternoon and evening giving children a cold and blustery but dry trick or treat evening.
