What is thundersnow?
Thundersnow is just as it suggests - a snowy thunderstorm. It is a rare phenomenon that is usually only seen in strong winter storms.
"Thundersnow occurs where there is relatively strong instability and abundant moisture above the surface of the Earth, such as above a warm front," according to the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service.
For thundersnow to happen, it usually takes similar ingredients from a thunderstorm to create it like moisture, instability and a lifting mechanism, the NESDIS said.
