ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A suspect was taken into custody on Saturday after a 4-year-old was killed, and another child was injured in a hit-and-run in north county Friday night.
"I just heard the lady, saying 'my baby, my baby.' and I saw the stroller completely flat in the street," said Angela Craig Bailey said the sight still has her shaken.
A mother was left sobbing in the street after a car ran into her two children.
"I heard like a crash and a boom, then I heard yelling and screaming," Bailey said.
It happened at the intersection of Chambers Road and Clairmont Drive in St. Louis County around 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Police said the mother was pushing the two kids in a stroller when the car struck them.
The 4-year-old boy -- Taveras Chisolm —later dying from his injuries at the hospital. The 2-year-old was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
"I just start crying, all I could do was cry, cry, cry behind that," said Jackie Lindsey.
Lindsey said that the family had just left her 24-hour daycare and were crossing the street to get to the bus stop.
"Hit her buggy, knocked the buggy out her hand and knocked it up the street and the car kept going," Lindsey said. "She was able to grab the little girl and the little boy got thrown from the buggy."
Neighbors say the tragedy is not particularly shocking after traffic lights that used to be at the crosswalk were ripped out by St. Louis County.
"If that had have been there last night, they coulda pressed and walked across safely," Bailey said.
5 On Your Side searched Google maps and found that the crosswalk had stoplights in May. But Bailey said the workers removed the crossing several weeks ago, giving people nowhere to safely get from one side of the street to the other.
"I thought they were taking them down and were repairing them or were gonna better ones up, but they are gone."
A major change that neighbors say makes a big difference.
"St. Louis County, can you guys please put these traffic lights back up? Maybe you can help save a life."
5 On Your Side reached out to the county district's councilperson and the department of transportation for comment, and is waiting to hear back.
