ST. LOUIS — Six people were killed this weekend in shootings across St. Louis, and three were injured, police said.

The violence began early Saturday shortly before 1:30 a.m. when firefighters and paramedics responded to a report of a one-car accident at South 7th Street and Chouteau Avenue south of downtown. When they arrived, they found an SUV that had hit a light pole. A man inside the SUV had been shot in the head. He was taken by ambulance to a St. Louis hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified Wednesday as 49-year-old Kerry Carter.

At about 3:15 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the left arm on the 3200 block of St. Vincent Avenue. Police said he was conscious and breathing.

On Sunday at 12:30 a.m., a 20-year-old man who had been shot was dropped off at a St. Louis hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead.

At about 4:40 a.m., police responded to the Missouri side of the Eads Bridge where they found 22-year-old Harley Branscomb of Moberly on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police said the victim and a 23-year-old woman were shot when unknown suspects drove past their car on the highway. Branscomb was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was uninjured.

About 30 minutes later, a man was found shot three times near the intersection of 16th and Pine streets. Police said two of the gunshots hit his chest; the other hit his back. Police identified him Monday afternoon as 25-year-old Tawan Ward of St. Louis.

At about 7:30 a.m., a man was found unresponsive and bleeding in the backyard of a home on the 7400 block of Lexington Avenue. He was pronounced dead at a St. Louis hospital, and it was determined he had suffered a traumatic brain injury and cardiac arrest.

Sunday afternoon, a 39-year-old man was shot to his right upper arm and suffered a graze wound to his left hand just before 2 p.m. in the 1100 block of Hadley Street. He told police he was sitting in a car when two suspects approached the driver's window and began firing shots into the car. The pair fled after the victim grabbed one of their guns.

Then, at about 10 p.m. Sunday, one person was killed and another was critically injured at Cates Avenue and Goodfellow Boulevard in the city's West End neighborhood. One of the victims was pronounced dead inside an apartment, and the other was taken to an area hospital in critical condition with unstable vital signs.
