ST. LOUIS — The site where a St. Louis County Police officer got into a crash Thursday morning is the same place one local business said is a dangerous stretch of South Lindbergh Boulevard.
A cruiser and a car leaving the Dave Sinclair Ford dealership collided, causing the latter to flip over.
Video obtained from the dealership shows a blue car let another vehicle traveling eastbound go by before starting to make a left turn. At that point, the accident occurred.
Fortunately, it appears both the officer and the driver will be OK, per county police.
However, there's a bigger issue, said James Sinclair, who is the President of this Dave Sinclair dealership. That is cars turning left out of the dealership onto Lindbergh.
"You can tell by the curb where you can see cars get crunched," said Sinclair about the number of crashes he's seen.
He said the busy traffic westbound on top of cars speeding eastbound to get to the nearby interstate creates challenges.
A solution could lie across the street. At The Home Depot, there is a curb in place to prevent cars turning left to eastbound.
Sinclair said there have been conversations with MoDOT to do the same in front of his business. The proposal would also lead to a change in the main entrance for the business with an added stoplight.
Sinclair said he believes that change would have prevented the accident.
However, while he wants this change to happen, he said a hurdle is the cost. He said it would cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars; the cost would fall mostly on his business, according to Sinclair.
He said that's the main holdup from the proposal getting closer to reality.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for MoDOT said there are no plans to work on Lindbergh in this area for at least the next two years.
He added any changes to entrances would be done by permit, and the cost would be incurred by the business.
