New Halls Ferry Road has seen hundreds of crashes. Police say they're taking a closer look into the dangers

Police say 112 crashes happened last year on New Halls Ferry Road, 33 of which resulted in injuries. There have already been 15 accidents and two deaths in 2024.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County police know that New Halls Ferry road is dangerous, which is the reason why they're analyzing data on or intersecting the road. At several intersections, there are cameras above, watching drivers.

Police said 112 crashes happened on the road last year. Thirty-three of them resulted in injuries, with no deaths. But 79 of the accidents resulted in property damage.

In 2024, there have already been 15 accidents, resulting in two injuries, one death and 12 instances of property damage, according to the most recent data from St. Louis County Police. The data doesn't include one of two fatal crashes that occurred last week on New Halls Ferry Road.

And some believe it's not a problem police can fix.

"It's pretty bad but it's kind of just Florissant. You're used to it, to be honest," said James Hull.

Hull, who works for Take 5 Oil Change, said he's had a front row seat to multiple crashes, police chases and overall bad driving habits on New Halls Ferry Road.

Hull believes he knows exactly why the road is so dangerous.

"I just think (drivers) don't care and they're just trying to get to point A to point B as fast as possible," Hull said.

A pedestrian, identified by police as Curly Brown, 65, was struck and killed Wednesday on New Halls Ferry Road. And on Saturday, the latest crash victim was Gary Bozeman.

Bozeman, 71, died after a truck traveled into oncoming traffic, hitting his truck, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The crash is still under investigation.

A memorial for Bozeman has taken shape on New Halls Ferry Road. He died Saturday night near the road's intersection with New Castle Drive.

County police acknowledged to 5 On Your Side Monday that they know this street is dangerous; last year there were over 100 accidents that happened on the road.

"You could be driving next to someone that's elderly or someone that has a baby aboard. You never know who you're driving by, just be cautious of the people around you," Hull said, adding, "I think more police is going to kind of make it worse."

He said it's a parent problem. And it's the reason why he's always willing to hire people who need help getting on the right track.

"It has to be at home, it has to be your parents, you make the kid, you have to raise the kid, it never stops," Hull said.

Lt. Aaron Schafer of the St. Louis County Police Department said they are working on the issue.

"We communicated with St. Louis County Transportation and MoDOT on enhancing crosswalk intersections, will soon receive a shipment of high-visibility vests to provide to residents, and patrols have increased at these high-incident locations," he said.
