West Alton firework store selling everything half off until store reopens from flood

The store is currently underwater as well as many homes and other businesses in West Alton.

WEST ALTON, Mo. — Flooding is still a big problem and probably will be for weeks in West Alton.

It could have an impact on your Fourth of July celebrations, even if your house isn't flooded.

Other than 1993, it's the worst flood Hal Orange has ever seen.

"Three weeks ago, that wasn't underwater then I came by two weeks later and it was underwater and I said I'll be damned," Orange said of Captain Jim's Fireworks.

Now water is the only customer at Captain Jim's Fireworks.

"I was totally shocked at what they're going to do too because these people are losing a ton of business," added Orange.

The longer the water sticks around the longer Captain Jim's owner Erica Meyer will have to improvise.

"Definitely not a great time but we're making it work day by day," said Meyer.

To do that they're selling everything half off online until they can get back into their store.

"We usually have about 50 employees but now it's just my husband, myself and three other people so it's a lot of work," explained Meyer.

Erica said she'll be fine but dozens of roads, homes and farmland in West Alton are still flooded.

"It's very hard to be displaced from your home, and it will be a long time before they are able to get back in there," added Meyers.

Others passing by still can't believe all the water that seems to be sticking around.

"Now with all this rain and stuff I'm trying to figure out when it's going to recede you know," said Orange.

A problem a lot of people here are trying to figure out too.
