Grafton racing to get ready for near-record crest

The crest is expected to reach levels only surpassed by the flood of 1993.

GRAFTON, Ill — After several weeks of flooding the rain in the forecast is only going to make things worse for river towns like Grafton, Illinois.

The Mississippi already hit the town's economy, keeping summer tourists away. But now, there's a race to save even more of the town from record-breaking flood levels.

The mayor is trying to marshal volunteers and materials to build a berm on Main Street. At stake are city hall, a historic church that's survived every flood for the past 185 years, and even some homes where the river has forced people to evacuate.

For businesses on Main Street first, they missed Mother's Day, then Memorial Day, and now some are worried they won't be dried-out in time for the Fourth of July.

In the meantime, they've still got water coming up, so, first thing Wednesday morning they'll be back out stacking more sandbags at 8 a.m.

The Mississippi is not expected to crest in Grafton until next Monday night or Tuesday and when it does it will be more than 17 feet above flood stage.
