‘They need somebody’: Restaurant offers free food to Lincoln County flood victims

HoneyBadger Grill opened up their hearts and kitchen to flood victims in Lincoln County.

Historic flooding and rising waters have impacted communities all over our area. As some residents struggle, others are trying to do everything they can to help.

One restaurant in Lincoln County is seeing the effects first hand in their community and decided to do what they can to help flood victims.

HoneyBadger Grill's goal was to not only serve food but to also serve the community. Owners Nick and Rachel Giacopelli knew they needed to step in.

At first, they gave food to the volunteers. Now, they are offering free food to flood victims.

"I can see it in their eyes that they are struggling, that [they] are hurt, they are damaged, they need somebody,” Rachel Giacopelli said.

Flood victims can choose either a pulled pork sandwich or cheeseburger with a side and a drink from the menu. The Giacopelli’s said you can come for lunch, dinner, or both.

Several families have come in, including the Miller's from Winfield.

"I mean it came so quick, we had no time to prepare. It's been very difficult, and this is just amazing what they are doing,” Rebecca Miller said.

As the Giacopelli's realized in the past several days of handing out free food, this is more than just a sandwich.

"I found out yesterday that it wasn't really about the meal. It's really them coming in and telling their story and talking to somebody. The ability that we can maybe put a smile on their face for 5 or 10 minutes is important to us," Rachel Giacopelli said.

HoneyBadger Grill said they will continue to hand out sandwiches as long as people need the help.

But it's not just this restaurant helping flood victims. Bubba's Barbecue is also feeding the people of Winfield, Foley, and Elsberry. They are serving their famous street tacos and street corn for all Lincoln County residents.

Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wood also started a GoFundMe. He wants to raise $5,000 or more to buy food, cleaning supplies, and basic necessities.

Lincoln County Health Department is also offering free tetanus shot clinics for anyone affected by the flooding.

Free tetanus shots will be available on Friday, June 7, 2019, and Tuesday, June 11, 2019, on a walk-in basis from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Winfield High School. The school is located at 3920 State Hwy 47 in Winfield. Shots will also be available by appointment at the Lincoln County Health Department in Troy, Missouri, while the flood response continues.

The Health Department said tetanus bacteria are everywhere in the environment including soil, dust, and manure. Tetanus is most commonly caused by the bacteria getting into the body through broken skin, usually through injuries from dirty objects.

During evacuation and flood cleanup, residents affected by flooding, emergency responders, cleanup workers, or volunteers may be at increased risk for these injuries.
